Originally, the Automotive Standard was known to be the ISO/TS 16949:2009 – the standard used in establishing the specific requirements for the Automotive Industry’s Quality Management System (QMS). Years passed and it migrated to being the IATF 16949:2016 that we all know.

The first and the initial version of the standard was created back in 1999 with the goal of integrating and coordinating different systems and processes in the Automotive Sector and business industry.

Independent Automotive Standard

As opposed to what most businesses or organizations think of the IATF 16949, it is a standalone standard that helps in the maintenance of the quality systems; it is, however, aligned with the requirements of the Quality Standard or more commonly known as the ISO 9001:2015, making it a needed integration.

In conclusion, IATF 16949 is a standard that cannot be implemented as an independent document but can be used as a complement or a supplement that would be in accordance with the most recent Quality Standard.
